The White City Chicago World's Fair 1893 Art Folio 1894
    Description:
    T
    he
1893 World's Columbian Exposition, now referred to as
    the
Chicago's World Fair, which was notable for several reasons:
    T
    he
    White
    City
    chose
Nikola Tesla’s alternating current instead of Thomas Edison’s direct current to power
    the
exposition. Tesla's AC power gave light to
    the
    "
    City
    of Light" during a
time when lighted streets were still a novelty.  As a result AC (alternating current) was proven to
    the
    US and
    the
    world that AC was
    a
viable technology and was the beginning of
    the
    end for
    the
    use of DC power distribution.
    The
    Columbian Exposition, or
    the
Chicago World’s Fair, is often called
    the
Fair that Changed America: Set on 600 acres the fair introduced folks to the wonders of electricity such as elevators, the Dishwasher and
    the
first electric chair. Products we now take for granted like
    the
zipper, Cream of Wheat, and Cracker Jacks were presented to fairgoers as well as
    a
    look at Edison’s kinetoscope and
    a
    listen to
    the
    first voice recording.
    The
    fairs
Midway Plaisance, from which we get
    the
term “midway,” and it's focal point the "Ferris Wheel" designed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. an engineer.  George Ferris' previous experience was limited to the railroad and mining Industries.
    The artist who sculpted
    Abraham Lincoln for
    the
    Lincoln Memorial
    Daniel Chester French, sculpted
    the highly boasted
    Statue of
    the
    Republic.
    The 6 story tall
    statue
    was nicknamed, Big Mary.
A smaller more permanent version that was closer to two stories tall was crafted
    after
    the
    end of the fair
    . T
    he
    organizers
    of the Fair also enlisted
    the
    help of
Frederick Law Olmsted.  Frederick Olmsted the landscape Architect
responsible for the design of New York
    City
    ’s Central Park, worked as
    the
    Fair’s landscape designer.
    The
Palace of Fine Arts was one of
    the
Fair’s most impressive buildings and remains to this day, thanks to some forward-thinking architects. Due to Chicago's
history of devastating fires, art collectors and museums were wary of sending art to
    the
    Fair. Charles B. Atwood,
    a
n architect that was part of Daniel
    Burnham's staff, designed
    the
    Palace to be fireproof.
    The
    Palace
    now houses
    the
    Museum of Science and Industry
    but still looks
    the
same as it did in 1893, except that it has been painted and is
    not
    white anymore
