    Description

Original pattern 1861 Civil War U.S. Marine Corps cap insignia.  Three piece.  Die-struck brass with all its original attachment loops still present.  The horn on the shield itself is still held in place by its original leather wedges.  The pattern was originally adopted in 1859 but in 1861 the overall size was reduced by 25% for enlisted men.  Officers continued to wear the larger version with a heavily gilded horn.  Beautiful condition but please judge condition for yourself by the pictures.  Fig. 700 in Cambell & O'Donnells book American Military Headgear Insignia.
