    Kan Kawada was born in Tokyo in 1927. He studied under Serizawa Keisuke, a master of the
    katazome
    or stencil-dyeing process. He graduated from the Ochanomizu Bunka Gakuin Art Institute in Tokyo. Kawada also created woodblock prints, exhibiting widely and earning many prizes, a.o. the Grand Prize at the Nitten Exhibition in 1992. In many of his works he depicts traditional Japanese architecture and street scenes.
