    Description

Souvenir medallion issued to celebrate the 1893 Naval Parade at New York,
    April 27, 1893.
    Eglit-211,
    31.5 mm struck in Aluminum
    .
The Obverse features a facsimile of the Santa Maria, Columbus' flagship. The Reverse shows the U. S. S. New York,
ACR-2, the first USN Armored Cruiser (technically NOT a Battleship) to enter Naval service,
then just recently being completed for sea trials in July.
    This medal a
uthorized by an Act of Congress, this was connected to the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the Columbus' journey to the New World, hence the cataloguing in Eglit who otherwise dealt with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Naval Review included replicas of Columbus' caravels, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, ships from a number of other countries and of course representatives from the U. S. Navy.
There were four medals issued in conjunction with the Naval Parade, Eglit 194, 195, 211, and 221.
This is Choice Almost Uncirculated or better with considerable Prooflike surfaces and some Cameo contrast on the Obverse.  Pierced for suspension as all pieces noted seem to have been; it was common to suspend such items from small ribbons, pinned to the chest during an event. Others of the Eglit catalogued medals from this event were issued on a ribbon badge.
This might certify as Unc if submitted to NGC, as they allow for the piercing.
